Our style crush… Christina Hendricks!
Have you ever seen Madmen? It’s an acquired taste, a bit like marmite, but the more we watch, the more we love it. And yes, we’ll confess, for us, the clothes are the best bit… especially when they’re worn by the gorgeous and oh-so-curvy Christina Hendricks!
In character…
She plays Joan Holloway, a sassy, fashion-savvy woman who always gets what she wants. Her character oozes confidence, charm and sophistication – she loves her curves and she knows how to work them – just like the actress who plays her! She’s our latest style crush and after her latest outing on the red-carpet, we won’t be getting over it any time soon!
On the red carpet…
At this weeks Golden Globe awards, we caught sight of her in the most stunning dress of the evening. Bright red, with right-now flower detailing, it skimmed over her curves in the most beautiful way – proving once and for all, that nothing is more gorgeous than a curvy woman!
And all this despite that fact that she almost lost a ‘borrowed’ bracelet worth a awe-inspiring €850,000 – yes, the lead lady had to hot-foot it back to the red-carpet while everyone else took their seats, to see if she could find the expensive accessory, which had fallen off her wrist as she passed the paparazzi. Luckily, an event co-ordinator found it and have it back before the panic took a toll on her picture-perfect appearance!
At home…
If you want to wow the crowds in a curve-skimming, red dress, just like Christina – try our brand new Simply Voluptuous Dress! It’s been specially designed with different cup size options, so you can get the perfect fit for your curves!
An accessory must!

As every fashionable plus size girl knows, accessories are essential. So when we saw the new Spring belt trend on the London Fashion Week catwalks, we just knew you were going to love it!
This season it’s all about knotting your belts. To do it, just tie a knot – or if your belt isn’t long enough, do it up as normal and fold the excess strap over the buckle then tuck it behind your belt.
Next season, it’s all about super-sizing – but instead of wearing really big belts, we’re going to be adding more! Different colours, different sizes and different patterns – layer them on for a SS11 look that will flatter your plus size figure! Remember, waists are totally feminine, so show yours off!
And if you want to see the trend in action on the London Fashion Week Catwalks, just take a look at all the gorgeous shots from Paul Smith’s show! Now isn’t that just the classiest way to wear a belt?
Want to start working the trend? Take a look at all the gorgeous belts in Simply Be’s Plus Size Fashion Collection!
SS11 Fashion is going to be BIG!
We’ve watched the catwalks, studied the designs and made our SS11 trend predictions. And the most noticeable, most unavoidable trend on our list is this – SS11 is going to be BIG! From oversized blazers to voluptuous dresses, barely balanced hats to flaring harems, this season your style is going to be super-sized!
Now in some ways, that’s great for us plus size girls. All those little worries, the things you like to hide – they’re going to be easy to cover up. With so many loose layers and floaty dresses, you have an arsenal of figure flattering trends at your disposal. So when the new season rolls round, remember to use it to your advantage. Show off the bits you love and hide away the bits you don’t! And whatever you wear – work it the plus size way!
But ladies, choose your trends carefully, because some of the new-season looks could very well make a plus size figure look bigger than it is! We’re talking shapeless, oversized dresses and structured bubble skirts – they look great on the models, but in real life, on a plus size girl – not so much!
Anyway, that’s our word of warning. Feel free to ignore – after all, you know your figure better than we do and as we all know, plus size girls come in every shape and size – so maybe you’re the exception to the rule!
Plus size trends that aren’t going anywhere!

Harem pants!
These little babies aren’t going anywhere! They were all over the London Fashion Week catwalks – and all the big designers are doing them. Think Bora Asku, Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith – each gave us harems in an oh-so Spring/Summer way!
And whether you jumped on the trend when it first appeared on the catwalks or are still to dip your toe in this fabulous trend pool – you’ve just got to stock up for Autumn and beyond! Naturally, at Simply Be we’ve got a lovely selection of hareems for you to choose from, in all the plus sizes you want.
Nudes!
Now, we don’t mean should you sign up to the local naturist society – this is purely a colour trend and it’s set to continue. Across the catwalks we saw designers introducing new shades to their designs, but the base colours stayed the same. From beige to peach, off-white to olive – nude neutrals will be all the rage in SS11!
It seems silly to list the designers who kept to their original colour palette, but just to give you an idea, we do a little name dropping. There was Jean-Pierre Braganza, Maria Grachvogel, Betty Jackson, Matthew Williamson and David Koma – to name but a few.
Invest in this trend now and it will definitely last through the next season! We’d recommend our sequin sleeve top, the Rock & Revival Jersey and of course, a gorgeous pair of cut-out court shoes!
Jumpsuits
This my plus size friends, is the trend to watch! It’s going to get bigger and bigger! Look to the SS11 catwalks…Maria Grachvogel… Jean-Pierre Braganza… Giles Deacon… they’re filled with gorgeous tailored jumpsuits, cute little playsuits and ‘is it, isn’t it’ pieces that give you the look in separates.
We say, get yours now and look gorgeous in a trend that will keep on giving! Why not try our lovely black jumpsuit with that necklace trim or for a more dressy option, the one shouldered catsuit? And we still have that cutesy Beach2Beach playsuit for Winter into Summer sun!
Anyway, those are the trends you can take from this season to the next! We know you’re all savvy plus size shoppers and you’ll want to make the most of them, so enjoy you’re shopping and look out for more updates soon!

Plus Size Model Focus – Whitney Thompson
0 Comments
We all know who Whitney Thompson is! She was the first, and is still the only, plus size model to win America’s Next Top model – rocketing her to fame and kick starting her plus size modelling career – so who better to talk about in the run-up to the Simply Be Model Competition?
The beginning of a beautiful plus size career!
There were some tough competitors in Cycle 10 of America’s Next Top Model. Russian Born Anya Kop lost out at the last minute and leggy Fatima Siad fell flat in the semi finals, leaving plus size princess Whitney to walk away with the big prize! Along the way, she faced geek chic in Lauren Utter, European flare in Katarzyna Dolinska and a ‘beautiful tranny’ in Dominique Reighard who went on to win Tyra’s Modelsville!
It has to be said, she was entertaining to watch, she said it how it was and her comments didn’t feel quite as catty as the other girls. Even in her very first photo, the one with Tyra and the rest of the girls, she really stood out – we should have known from the start!
After America’s Next Top Model…
A modelling contract with Elite Model Management, a CoverGirl cosmetics campaign and a six page editorial in Seventeen Magazine came with her title, so her plus size modelling career started with a real bang. Since then she’s modelled for Plus Model Magazine, People Magazine, Forever 21, Converse and Torrid.
Oh, and did we mention the CoverGirl commercial she did with Rhianna, you know, that insanely-famous, Umbrella pop princess?
An award winning walk
It wasn’t long ago that we were all a-flutter about Full Figured Fashion Week and no doubt Whitney was too, because she was up for an award – and no surprises, she won! So when you next see a picture of Whitney in your glossy fashion mags, remember you’re looking at the Plus Size Runway Model of the Year!
A model with a message
But Whitney isn’t just a pretty face, she’s got a voice too! She’s the ambassador for the National Eating Disorder Association, which basically means she takes time out of hectic model lifestyle to raise awareness about eating disorders and show women that curves are beautiful!
And her good deeds don’t end there! It’s just been announced that Whitney will be hosting Love Your Body Day! The big event will take place on Saturday 23 October at West Hollywood Park Auditorium – so if any of our American fans are in the area, put it in your diary!
Could you be the next Whitney Thompson?

Top tips from the plus size community!
Okay, so this week we decided to do a style special packed with top tips from curvy women. So we sent a tweet out to the plus size community, inviting them to get involved – and the response was overwhelming!
Everyone said something different, but it all came down to one thing - wear what you love and love what you wear! For plus size women, fashion is about being yourself, knowing what works for you and holding your head high. Don’t listen to the rules, don’t be afraid to follow the trends and most importantly, don’t wear anything you’re not 100% happy in!
Here’s what the girls had to say…
‘Work your clothes, don’t let your clothes work you
D They’re an extension of your personality so just roll with it
D xxx’ @MessyCarla
‘Your curves and your clothes define you. So be yourself. Be true.’ @Vanoue3
‘Embrace your curves and work what your momma gave ya!!!’ @MatronJo
‘Wear what makes you feel happiest and most ready to face the world.’ @lapocketrocket
‘Embrace your curves… If you’re not working with them, you’re working against yourself.’ @BoomBands
‘My style tip is be confident when wearing an outfit. Wear confidence like a piece of clothing
’ @LaCara91
‘Don’t follow the the “rules” unless they make you feel amazing. No point wearing a wide belt and bootcut jeans if you feel wrong!’ @ChatterMonkey
‘Dress for yourself, no one else.. Break the ‘fat girls should’t wear’ rules. Wear what makes your feel beautiful!’ @katkins1982
Oh, and the other trend we saw – lingerie!
It’s an absolute essential for curvy women! Chances are, you need a little extra support, but it’s also great for shaping your figure – and we don’t just mean shapewear! Different bra styles can actually make your boobs look different, from full-cup teardrop shapes to the famed balconette roundness, your lingerie drawer deserves just as much attention as your wardrobe.
So if you haven’t done already, take a look at our plus size lingerie collection and follow these lovely ladies tips…
‘Start with good under garments!’ @LovelyLilac88
‘The best tip for curvy ladies is to chose good underwear, it gives you great shape and can make or break a good outfit’ @beckslayer
And one we didn’t expect…
‘Attach braces to your knickers…stops them rolling down’ @soggykipper
Big thanks to everyone who sent us a tip – you’re all gems!
