90s fashion is having a bit of a moment right now and we can’t help but be reminded of when it all looked edgy the first time around.
No one embraced the grungey look quite like on/off BFF’s Angela Chase and Rayanne Graff of My So Called Life.
Can you believe it’s 18 years since it last graced our screens? We followed them through their teenaged trials and tribulations, swooned over Jordan Catalano – and now we’re swooning over the fabulous fashion that’s found its way back into style. Awkward little 15 year old Angela Chase (Claire Danes) is all grown up and sophisticated in Homeland now of course, but we’ll always remember her like this:
The secret to the look is slouch: slouchy tops, slouchy jeans – and lots of layering.
The plaid shirt is as essential to the look as Smashing Pumpkins and the Cranberries were to your ghettoblaster stereo. Layer with faded denim, oversized knits and cute print tea dresses teamed with Doc Marten style boots. Slouch jeans, skater skirts and leggings will sort your lower half.
Aspiring rock star Rayanne was always more out-there with her looks – mashing as many clashing prints together as possible, all topped off with heaps of hippy jewellery and baseball cap (what else?) for good measure.
For the authentic MSCL look, braid the odd teeny-tiny plait into your hair, and work on perfecting your ‘hug yourself’ pose.
