Plus Size Model Focus: Laura Catteral

As you’ve probably already heard, we launched our plus size model competition last week. And everyone’s been so enthusiastic! Thanks for all your blogs, tweets and Facebook messages – we’re really glad you’re all so up for it!
Anywho, since we’re looking for our own Face of Plus Size Fashion, we thought it might be nice to look over all the lovely examples that are already out there. So this is the first of a series of blogs that will focus on the plus size fashion models we all love to see!
And to kick it all off – Laura Catteral!
Laura is undoubtedly one of the big names of the plus size modelling world. She shot to fame in 2009 after strutting down the London Fashion Week catwalks in Mark Fast’s legendary show. It was reported that Fast’s stylist quit after he chose to use plus size models on the catwalk and soon Laura’s picture was plastered over newspapers, magazines and blogs the world over!
Even before that career changing moment, Laura was destined to be a plus size sensation. She’d already featured in The Sunday Times Style Supplement and taken on a runway assignment for Elena Miro’s AW09 collection in Milan. But afterwards, well it’s been a whirlwind for the curvy beauty…
Post Mark Fast…
Since finding tabloid fame in 2009, Laura’s modelled for Anna Scholz, Special K and I-D magazine. She’s also one of our very own lingerie models. Last year, she did her first ever Simply Yours TV commercial – and what a lovely job she did. We asked her back to do a second this year and she’s now one of our catalogue models too!
And then there’s the editorial stuff! Gosh, we’ve seen Laura everywhere this year! The curvy revolution is definitely here and she’s one plus size model who’s been in high demand.
First there was that Vogue Curvy Italy piece – if you haven’t already visited the Vogue Curvy Site it’s definitely worth a weekly stop. She was one of their ‘Daily Suggestions’ models and you can still find her on the site today.
And just lately, Vogue Curvy have done an interview with her detailing some of those sneaky little facts you just wouldn’t think of the plus size model. For example, she’s got a degree in Communications and Journalism – and when her modelling days are over, she’d like to switch to another fabulous fashion job by starting a career as a fashion journalist. So we look forward to even more fabulous fashion from her, even when her curves leave the catwalk.
But her high-flying editorial career doesn’t end with Vogue Curvy Italy. Just last week she was the talk of the plus size blogging world after a set of stunning images of her were printed in the French Marie Claire. In these scantly clad swimwear shots, she proves that curvy is absolutely beautiful.

The plus-size model debate has been raging over on our Facebook page and it seems our customers are keen to see the Simply Be Fashion Collection on real plus size women. So we thought we’d devote today’s blog to all the gorgeous, curvy bloggers who’ve been writing about our stuff over the last couple of months.

This fabulous little blog is written by Em. X – a lovely curvaceous woman that totally loves fashion. Over the last couple of months she’s written quite a few blogs about Simply Be. Naturally, we’re delighted – especially because she looks so totally gorgeous in everything she wears!
One of the great things about Em’s blog is that she posts pictures and videos – so you can see the look in action and actually hear what she has to say about it (in that amazing Aussie accent!) So head over and see what she’s done with our Tribal Print Dress (above), our Floral Maxi Dress and our Anna Scholz Print Dress.

Next on the list is Pocket Rocket Fashion. Written by the lovely Lauren, it’s filled with gorgeous shots of the lady herself wearing the season’s hottest looks! As you can see from the picture above, she is quite the fashionista, wearing the latest lace trend straight from the Simply Be collection.
We’re particularly impressed by how different Lauren looks in all her shots. In one post she’s pretty and girly… in the next cool and on-trend… then shortly afterwards, cute ‘n quirky – it just goes to show that fashion really can take you anywhere!

And finally – The Fat Nurse, a blog that follows the fashion-forays of Devon, a curvy nurse from Essex. This is your down-to-earth, ‘tell you what I love and what I don’t’ kind of blog and we adore it! The pictures are quirky, as you can see from the one we’ve chosen above. It’s our Jungle Maxi Dress but shown from the back, which is a great take on it, don’t you think?
And that’s not the only Simply Be look that we’ve seen on her blog! There was the one with our Peek-a-boo Leggings… the one with our Spicy Summer Dress… the one with our Miracle Swimsuit … ooh we do like being liked!
This blog is all about loving curves, wearing what you like but knowing what suits your figure and your style. And it’s not just fashion, there’s a bit of beauty, plenty of accessories and lots of opinions. Though if you don’t like swearing, it might not be for you

With all these fabulous competitions going on, we haven’t been giving you the usual trend insight. But fear not, because we’re going to make it all up to you in one post, by mixing up all the Summers hottest plus size trends! From florals to cut-outs, vintage to nautical, we’ve doubled them up to make a trend statement!
Trend-on-trend!
It’s easy to play it safe, to wear one trend at a time, but today we’re going to show you how to mix them up for maximum impact. The rules are simply – just ‘try it and see’. If you’re ordering something new, try it out with the rest of your wardrobe, even those controversial combinations. It’s the best way for a plus size gal to find the most flattering fashion options!
3 looks, so many trends!
To help inspire you to make your own trend combos, we’ve put together 3 plus size looks for you, mixing matching some of the season’s hottest trends. You can see at a glance that they all work – and that they’ll give you instant standout in the fashion crowds. Check them out and get inspired!
Plus size look 1
Not all trend clashes have to be blatant, you can do it subtly with a couple of key pieces – like here, where we’ve mixed vintage, tough-cuffs and zebra prints!
The most important part of this look is the dress. Vintage in its style but brand new and made to last, there’s no sloppy seconds for you! We’ve coupled it with tough cuffed sandals for an instant trend lift, then added a touch of zebra print in that quirky necklace. Simple but effective!
Plus size look 2
Denim-on-denim meets new nauticals in this cute plus size look. From the bottom up, you’ve got those lovely Ravel sandals. In a gorgeous shade of navy they tap into the nautical trend but work just as well as a stand alone piece!
Next up, the biker jeans! A must for this season, they’re tough and trendy all at the same time. You wouldn’t expect to see them with nauticals, but they work a treat!
On top, we’ve got this lovely plus size tee. The neckline makes the look, weaving those nautical hues into a really attention grabbing style!
And to finish, we’ve doubled up on denim! This plus size, sleeveless jacket will come in really handy over the Summer months, you can wear it with absolutely anything. Undone, zipped up, slung over your shoulder – it can be cute, tough and totally versatile.
Plus size look 3
Cut-outs… florals… and just a touch of tribal… we’re taking the trends and working them into a totally new look!
Starting from the top, we’ve got this cute button-up floral number. It’s one of our favourites, so flattering and perfect as a top or a waistcoat. Here we’d wear it as a top with that ethnic-style necklace working as an extra layer.
The soft, romantic feel of the top clashes perfectly with our peek-a-boo leggings. It’s that tough-chic effect and we totally love it! Just add cut-out heels, something with a little bling like these Rocket Dog courts and you’re all set to wow to fashion masses!

Ever wanted to try modelling? Well here’s your chance because we’re running a plus size model competition! We’re looking for curvy women, from size 14 up. No experience necessary, but you have to be comfortable in front of the camera and happy to strut stuff down the catwalk. If that sounds like you, then we want to hear from you!
